Three suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition

JOBURG CENTRAL – Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said that the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

Three suspects were arrested yesterday, 14 July for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in conjunction with the Railway Police.

The suspects were between the ages of 30 to 34. Two of the suspects were apprehended at Wanderers Taxi Rank, on the corner of Noord and Wanderers street, while the third suspect was apprehended at Railway Park Station Bus terminal.

According to Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties at the taxi rank when they searched passengers inside a taxi going to Harding, KwaZulu-Natal. “Two passengers were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. While busy with operations at bus terminals they also recovered a firearm from the suspect inside a bus to Cape Town. A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were once arrested for crimes ranging from attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms,” explained Mbele.

Mbele said the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Tony Perumal commended members for removing illegal firearms from the wrongful hands. He urged the community to keep giving police information about crime happening in their precinct as working together will subdue the escalation of crime.
