55-year-old arrested on Plein Street for possession of an unlicensed firearm

JOBURG CENTRAL – Captain Xoli Mbele said that a preliminary investigation revealed that a firearm was reported stolen at the Johannesburg Central Police Station on 12 March 2020.

Police arrested a 55-year-old male for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on the corner of Wanderers and Plein streets yesterday, 14 July at 4pm.

According to Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, explained that a security guard, who was at his place of work, noticed a man following him as he went to his room. When he questioned the man, the man allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at him. “The security guard then screamed for help and the community came to his rescue,” Mbele said.

Mbele added that police officers, who were stopped on the street, apprehended the suspect. “A firearm with live ammunition was recovered with a bunch of keys. A preliminary investigation revealed that a firearm was reported stolen at the Johannesburg Central Police on 12 March 2020.”

Mbele added that an investigation is under way and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
