36-year-old man arrested for statutory rape in Joburg Central

JOBURG CENTRAL – The station commander urged the community to expose those who are abusing women and children.

Police officers arrested a 36-year old man for statutory rape on Sunday, 12 July in Johannesburg Central.

The suspect was arrested on the corner of Rahima Moosa (previously Jeppe) and Von Brandis streets at 1pm.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said, “It is alleged that the suspect raped a 10-year-old girl… The victim told her mother that her uncle closed her face with a blanket and raped her.”

Mbele added that an investigation is under way and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Johannesburg Central Station Commander, Brigadier Irvin Perumal commended members for their swift response in apprehending a suspect. He urged the community to expose those who are abusing women and children.
