Accident hot spot needs safety upgrades

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette has on a few occasions reported on accidents that have occurred at the intersection.

Craighall Park resident Ralf Degni has been requesting the installation of a traffic light on the corner of Jan Smuts and Waterfall avenues for the past few months.

The concerned resident has appealed to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to consider his request.  “There are three businesses at that intersection which cause a lot of hassles as no one expects or looks for cars trying to turn in or out of these premises,” he said.

“Also, motorists do U-turns at this intersection, going up or down Jan Smuts Avenue, at break-neck speeds.” He added that he had lived in Waterfall Avenue for 21 years and could not recall one week where there had not been an accident or two.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette has on a few occasions reported on accidents that have occurred at the intersection. In an online article, Taxi accident kills one on Jan Smuts, fleeing driver caught by CAP officers [Week ending 14 December 2018], the paper reported that a pedestrian was killed after a minibus taxi crashed into a traffic light at the intersection.

Another online article, Accidents occur on the same spot twice in four days [Week ending 28 May 2018], it was reported that two vehicles had collided and sustained visible damage although the drivers and passengers were unhurt.

Degni claimed he and a City official had conducted a site inspection, and his request had been approved and a work order number had been issued but nothing had happened. JRA were contacted and acknowledged receipt of the query but had not given a response at the time of going to press.
