Joint operation deals with ‘problem property’

DUNKELD – The owner is making efforts to secure the place and he has been put in touch with a City building inspector to discuss proposals to secure the property.

Efforts were made to address the ‘problem property’ on 21 Bompas Road in Dunkeld.On 18 June, Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams reported on Facebook that Bramley police Sector 4, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, and the South African National Defence Force conducted a joint operation at the property.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette had earlier reported on the property in Property is problematic after years [Week ending 12 June 2020]. The article reported that Williams had raised concerns that there were about 45 people living there with no water or sanitation. An official from the City had confirmed that waste pickers were living there. The councillor said there was no immediate solution to the problem.

“It is a private property therefore the onus is on the owner to take care of the problem. The owner is making efforts to secure the place and he has been put in touch with a City building inspector to discuss proposals to secure the property,” Williams said.

He added that the police arrested one man for selling liquor on the day and every other time raids were conducted, one or two people would be arrested. “The people living there simply refuse to go to shelters,” said the councillor. Williams added that he had a site meeting with City officials regarding ways forward for the property’s security. The Bramley Police Station was not available for comment on the raid.
