Parktown Girls make impressive coin creations

PARKTOWN – Learners at Parktown High School for Girls decided to hold their traditional Bling Day event on a virtual platform.

A vital part of being a Parktown High School for Girls learner is to experience age-old traditions.

According to Grade 12 learner at Parktown Girls and chairperson of the Potted Sports Committee, Ammaarah Cachalia, one of these traditions is the school’s Bling Day.

“During these times of lockdown, we find ourselves missing the experiences and joys that are inherent to being a Parktown learner. One of the prime examples of this being Bling Day (also fondly known as Copper Coin day by many old girls),” said Ammaarah.

She said that on 8 May, all 30 Parktown reg classes would’ve marched to the drive, determined to create coin creations to fill the drive with but, more importantly, all their coins would’ve gone to their charity for this year, the House Group.

Ammaarah said instead of waiting in uncertainty about whether or not they’d have a Bling Day, the Potted Sports Committee decided to host their very own Virtual Bling Day on 15 May.

The theme was ‘Lockdown heroes/ Lockdown life’ in a celebration of our essential workers and to commemorate what people have been doing during their lockdown time. The virtual event was open to everyone, and the task was to create a coin creation in accordance with the theme and thereafter send a picture to the Potted Sports Instagram account.

“We were pleasantly surprised to receive over 50 submissions of wonderful coin creations, which meant that despite our day not physically taking place – it was a rather successful event. In conjunction with the positive response, we received R835 in donations which will definitely go a long way in aiding our charity,” said Ammaarah.

She extended a big ‘thank you’ to all who contributed in their own way to the event. Ammaarah said, “Most importantly though, a big thank you must go to every single essential worker who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the citizens of South Africa are continually protected by your services. You truly epitomise the saying that ‘not all heroes wear capes’.”
