Watch: Joburgers finally get their drinks

JOBURG – The much-awaited opening of liquor stores finally happened and residents couldn’t wait to make purchases.

Liquor stores were opened on 1 June and Joburgers were eager to get their hands on the drinks. When lockdown commenced about two months ago, the sale of alcohol was banned. However, as the country moved to Level 3 lockdown on 1 June, alcohol was allowed to be sold under certain conditions. People will be allowed to purchase alcohol for home consumption and not at social gatherings as these are still prohibited or onsite consumption.

One could feel the anticipation in the air as residents lined-up at a liquor store closest to them. Liquor City Hyper in Craighall Park had its fair share of visitors as masked shoppers queued outside and got sanitized as they entered the shop.

Ultra Liquors in Bramley had a queue of about 1km with buyers observing social distancing. At around 11am, some people in the queue could be heard estimating that they would make it into the shop at 4pm because of the long queue which went right around the store. The shoppers were also sanitised as they entered the shop.

Savoy Liquors had only a few people lining up outside. For all three liquor stores visited, social distancing and safety measures of wearing masks and sanitising were observed.
