Colours inspire hope in Craighall

The painting is a symbol of hope and kindness, and 'from our house to yours, stay safe, stay positive, keep smiling'.

Currently, the world needs all the hope it can get. What better way to do this than by adding some? make that, lots ? of colour to life?

Craighall Park resident, Elke Bantz, and her family, known as the Smit family, have risen to this task, and the suburb’s residents passing by may have noticed the colourful painting at the entrance of Bantz’s home.

The family of five has lived in the Parks for 20-odd years and, in their current house in Craighall Park, for about 11 years. Katz lives with her husband and three children.

Regarding the inspiration behind the painting, Bantz said, “All over the world, people are making rainbows out of various materials and displaying them in their windows as a symbol of hope amid the Covid-19 lockdown. As we in South Africa live behind high walls, we thought we would go a little further and paint our wall in rainbow colours.”

She added that the painting is a symbol of hope and kindness, and ‘from our house to yours, stay safe, stay positive, keep smiling’. Bantz said with the help of her family, they painted it all in one day on Easter Monday. An impressed neighbour posted a picture of the painting on Facebook and hundreds of social media users lapped it up in admiration and fondness.

Bantz said they certainly never expected such a response. “The community spirit has been amazing and we have met so many of our neighbours that have stopped and shown their kids the wall. I certainly never thought that the Facebook post would get such a positive response but I am so glad that it has put a smile on so many people’s faces during these trying times,” shared Bantz.
