Early morning joggers robbed in suburbs as Level 4 lockdown is phased in

JOHANNESBURG – It is suspected that the same group committed 'snatch-and-grab' robberies in three other suburbs.

With Level 4 lockdown restrictions in place, residents are cautioned to take even greater care. It seems it’s not only those keen to exercise that embraced the new phase of lockdown; but also, those keen to perpetrate crime.

Alexandra police spokesperson Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha, who is on standby for Bramley police, confirmed a report by Community Active Protection (CAP) Security. He confirmed that two suspects were arrested for allegedly robbing early morning joggers and the third suspect was still at large. The spokesperson added the suspects were not held at Bramley Police Station.

A report by CAP Security stated that two arrests had been made following several attacks. “In the last few days there have been reports of individuals targeting early morning walkers and runners in order to steal their cell phones. These individuals have been driving in the area with one of the suspects posing as a jogger in order to blend in,” CAP said.

The CAP Command Centre received reports of three incidents being committed whereby the suspects had robbed residents in the street. It was reported that the suspects were driving a light blue Honda sedan.

The vehicle description and the suspects’ descriptions were circulated between the CAP teams and uploaded to CAP’s License Plate Recognition cameras. On 4 May, an officer on duty made a positive identification of the vehicle.

“On approach, the suspects exited the vehicle in question near Aintree Avenue in Savoy and tried to run out of the area. A chase ensued. Two suspects were arrested and the vehicle has since been recovered. A third suspect is still at large,” said CAP.

The suspects are believed to have committed the below ‘snatch-and-grab’ robberies:

  • 1 May – robbery in Oaklands
  • 1 May – robbery in Rosebank
  • 4 May – robbery in Greenside.

CAP said their legal team will follow the case in order to assist authorities and ensure that justice is served.

CAP said, “Well done to everyone involved, from the residents who called in suspicious activity to the reports being opened and tactical teams chasing the vehicle – together we can beat crime. Reporting and opening cases are crucial for investigations within CAP and the SAPS. Opening a case ensures criminals are legally charged for all the crimes they have committed.”
