Social good comes out of beer machine

JOBURG – SAB stands by the country in good and bad times. This time, to help provide sanitiser for the nation.

As some people clamor for alcohol and threaten to take government to court over its ban amid the coronavirus pandemic, premier beer maker is instead lending a helping hand to government.

The South African Breweries (SAB) has turned part of its machines to making sanitiser to help mitigate the infection numbers that have shot over the 3 000 mark. The company’s gesture was prompted by government’s appeal for support to enhance its protective measures and help flatten the curve in the infection rate.

In a statement, SAB Vice President, Zoleka Lisa, said their decision was prompted by the sky-rocketing demand for the alcohol-based sanitizer. “We have adapted our operations to address the shortage of hand sanitiser with 70 per cent alcohol, which is what the healthcare sector needs.”

Lisa said they have delivered almost 60 000 hand sanitiser bottles to hospitals countrywide, including at Riverpark Clinic in Alexandra and to other health facilities in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces. “The consignment is part of the 100 000 bottles we aim to deliver by the end of April as a priority to securing the health and safety of our people and of the health workers who are at the frontline of fighting this pandemic.”

She said this was also in keeping with the company’s 125 years history. “We have been part of it in triumph and during its challenges.

“In this time of uncertainty, the decision was an easy one as we know that we need to show our commitment to the country in any way we can.”

She concluded, “We want to be part of the solution and encourage good health and hygiene in the absence of a vaccine.”
