Sandton SPCA celebrates inspector heroes

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA celebrated a team of dedicated animal inspectors. They dedicated the month of March to create awareness of inspectors and show appreciation.

The Sandton SPCA dedicated March to a group of animal inspectors.

The group was made up of five superheroes who are qualified to enforce the Animals Protection Act. They received training from the National Council of SPCAs and have earned their stripes to become inspectors.

The aim of the celebration is to create awareness of the important roles played by inspectors in communities as well as share stories of their work as they help hundreds of animals that need them.

Stephen Maila, senior inspector from the Sandton SPCA said, “Imagine a community without an SPCA, what will happen to the abused, neglected and abandoned animals? We are dedicated people who wake up every day to make a difference in the lives of many animals in society.”

Maila describes an SPCA superhero as someone who has the interest of animals at heart at all times, someone who forms part of a force to be reckoned with and a person in the welfare vanguard for all living creatures in our communities.

The five superheroes who were celebrated were:

  • Inspector Obed Mohlala who has been with the SPCA movement for more than 35 years
  • Inspector Xolane Mncube has been with the Sandton SPCA for almost four years
  • Inspector Warren Siziba has been with the Sandton SPCA for almost 19 years
  • Inspectorate controller Godfrey Mnguni has been with the Sandton SPCA for two years
  • Senior inspector Stephen Maila has been with the Sandton SPCA for almost 13 years.

Their duties are to investigate cruelty complaints, respond to rescues, educate the public about animal welfare, carry out the proactive inspection in all environments or establishments where there are animals and enforce the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

“Animals are the most vulnerable and they are voiceless. They have to have someone to speak on their behalf and advocate for their welfare. Society must have respect towards animals, they shouldn’t own them if they don’t have the love and ability to look after them. Even if they do own them they must treat them with kindness,” added Maila.
