Tree propagation plan in place to counter the effect of PSHB

JOBURG – City Parks has an emergency team in place to remove dead trees that are infested, which pose a risk to people and property.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Jenny Moodley says they continue to inform residents regarding the identification and impact of polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) during the lockdown.

The entity has published a detailed handbook about the shot-hole borer on their social media platforms and it is also available on www.jhbcityparks.com

A meeting, led by the Department of Environment and Forestry had to be postponed in light of Covid-19 and the subsequent 21-day lockdown.

“The meeting was aimed at putting in place an advocacy plan to educate and inform residents and all relevant stakeholders on PSHB,” said Moodley.

She said that in the interim, City Parks has an emergency team in place to remove dead trees that are infested and that pose an immediate risk to people and property.

“An accelerated tree propagation plan is also in place to increase the number of trees available in City Parks’ nurseries.”

According to Moodley, mass planting has commenced in some regions in the City. Further announcements will be made regarding the removal of dead infested trees and the associated planting of new trees that are already being removed.

“All other initiatives such as the mapping of infested trees have ceased due to safety requirements and restrictions,” concluded Moodley.
