Williams unpacks his ward’s response to lockdown

CRAIGHALL PARK – Williams says he has been encouraged to see the positive spirit of community members in his ward.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams says residents have responded well to the lockdown in his ward.

“They appreciate the seriousness of Covid-19 and they are making the necessary adjustments to help curb the spread of the virus,” said Williams.

He has been encouraged to see the positive spirit of community members in different ways.

“It is encouraging to see so many Ward 90 residents not only offering to help the less fortunate but also actively arranging to collect and distribute. This is quite a challenge under the restrictions.”

He said many residents have also engaged in the nightly ritual of clapping and music at 7pm in order to show appreciation for frontline workers during this pandemic.

Williams noted that the main issue in his ward is the plight of displaced people. He said that the City has set up shelters but they are currently not coping with the vast numbers of displaced people across the city.

Williams has observed that on many groups within the ward, there has been discussion on the advisability of walking instead of driving to shops. “The regulations do not say we are not allowed to walk to shops. However, common sense suggests that if you have a car, you use it. This is the quickest way there and back, with least exposure to and from others.”

“Note, gardening is not a permitted essential service in the regulations… Anyone venturing out of their property for any other purpose than those permitted in the regulations risks arrest. I do not recommend gardening on your pavement.”

Williams advised all residents to obey the rules about handwashing, sanitising and keeping social distance. “Be mindful, be kind. Stay in touch with family and friends. The more people comply with lockdown rules, the sooner this will be over. Stay home,” concluded Williams.
