Houghton community unite in the fight against Coronavirus

HOUGHTON – A local online radio station is also assisting in sharing important news.

Residents have been urged to practice social distancing during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, however, this has not stopped the community of Houghton from working together.

The community in the Lower Houghton united in solidarity against the pandemic and are putting in the efforts to ensure everyone’s safety amid the worldwide Covid-19 virus.

According to Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett, who has been hard at work with local community and residents’ associations, various activities are taking place in the fight against this virus. “The Lower Houghton Resident Association (LHRA) is organising the making and distributing of masks through organisations in the area. LHRA is also organising other aid to people in need.”

The councillor has managed to get a donation of 75 masks and 100 litres of sanitisers which she has dropped off at the Norwood Police Station.

She added that Chai FM, a local online radio station, has set up a helpline for residents in need of support in any way while Norwood Orange Grove Residents Association is also working with SPAR to assist organisations in need in the area.

“Residents who want to assist have all been encouraged to contact their residents’ associations and work through them for safety reasons…both to avoid the spread of the virus and to avoid donating to scammers.

Huggett thanked all the residents’ associations and the community policing forums as well as all the individual residents who are assisting others during the lockdown. She thanked them for their support and for informing her of issues that need to be addressed.
