More than 500 hungry people gathered in Bramley hoping to get food parcels from an unknown businessman

BRAMLEY– Makhubele added that the business person whom the group of people was waiting for, has not been found.

The South African Police Service has called on members of the public to adhere to the rules of the national lockdown announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last month.

This was after the police dispersed more than five hundred people who had gathered at Bramley Primary School on 14 April with the hope of receiving food parcels from an unknown business person.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said the crowd gathered at the school following rumours that an unknown business person would distribute food parcels.

“The group of people was dispersed by the police because they were contravening the law and the rules set by the national government following the outbreak of coronavirus,” added Makhubele. “It is unlawful for people to get together during the lockdown. The police are monitoring the area and we are calling on community members to stay home during this lockdown.”

Makhubele added that the business person whom the group of people was apparently waiting for had not been identified.
