Norwood police intensify fight against crime during lockdown

NORWOOD – Majority of suspects were arrested for contravening the national disaster curfew.

Norwood police arrested 35 suspects between 8 and 13 April for various crimes including for contravening the Disaster Management Act implemented for the lockdown.

According to the police, 28 people were arrested for breaking the national lockdown regulations and were expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on 14 April.

Sergeant Eric Masotsha, the spokesperson for the Norwood police said, “They [28 people] were arrested because they failed to produce the required documents such as permits.

“People must comply with the Disaster Management Act because it clearly states that people need to be indoors during the lockdown or at least have some kind of a proof for moving around. We request that those who are going to doctors’ appointments to also have in their possession a letter or a note confirming their claims including those attending funerals as well.”

He appealed to residents to comply with the rules because it was necessary for everyone to combat the coronavirus together.

Masotsha said they also arrested three suspects for shoplifting adding that this crime had become prevalent during the lockdown. He urged stores to tighten up their security to ensure that they curbed this problematic crime and protected their stock.

“We are working around the clock as the police to enforce law and order but we also request the community and the business people to also play their part.”

Other arrests included a suspect who was arrested for hijacking, one for sexual assault, one facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one for a business break-in.
