Coronavirus shutdown curfew delays Patterson Park construction project

NORWOOD – The days not worked affects the project as the project was to reach completion at the end of May.

The Patterson Park construction project in Norwood is currently on hold due to the prolonged national lockdown.

This was confirmed on 10 April by Susan Munyai, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), an entity of the City of Johannesburg.

According to Munyai, the project was earmarked for completion in May this year, however, due to the lockdown the project will not be completed as expected.

During the lockdown, only workers providing essential services are allowed to continue working, so, many construction projects have been put on hold. “The project was 92 per cent complete [before the lockdown]. The only outstanding item is the construction of the soccer fields and the external works leading from 9th Street. All other items are completed and are currently being [inspected].”

The contractors were expected to be back on site on 20 April but due to President Cyril Ramaphosa extending the lockdown by a further two weeks, this will not happen.

To ensure that the project is completed within the set deadline, Munyai suggested that they might have to look at a revised construction programme if necessary.
