Covid-19: Government launches Covid-19 multi-media learner support initiative

The TV, radio and video programme initiative is to prevent a total loss of schooling year since the lockdown.

The Department of Basic Education and national broadcaster SABC have launched a Covid-19 TV and radio curriculum support programme for school learners during the lockdown.

The department said in a statement that the initiative is to prevent a total loss of the schooling year after President Cyril Ramaphosa enforced a 21-day lockdown to combat Covid-19 on 26 March.

The programme is set to begin on 9 April and will be broadcast on all SABC channels and 13 radio stations with online support. “The series will provide curriculum support lessons to learners in grades 10, 11 and 12 and early childhood development (ECD). Some of the subjects covered include maths, physical sciences, English FAL, life sciences and accounting. A variety of African languages are also covered under the ECD basket,” the statement read.

The programme is also to anticipate the June exams by providing learners with relevant support they need in order to be prepared for the walk-in exams. The initiative is also supported by YouTube.

TV schedules:

SABC 1: Monday to Sunday: 5am to 6am

SABC 2: Monday to Friday: 9.30am to 11am

SABC 3: Monday to Friday: 6am to 7am

Mathanzima Mweli, the director-general of the Department of Basic Education said, “We welcome the commitments and support from the public broadcaster to support the educational programming during this time of the lockdown. Our learners need all the support they can get in order to continue learning at home as schools are closed because of the coronavirus.”

Learners have been encouraged to check their local listings for the exact time slots on the radio.
