Ron Smith Care Centre hosts private birthday celebration for Betty Hood (95)

LYNDHURST – "The care centre provided a cake and some beautiful flowers for Betty, and a special birthday tea was held to celebrate her momentous day."

A Ron Smith Care Centre resident Betty Hood celebrated her 95-year-old birthday without her family due to coronavirus visit limitations on 23 March.

The celebrations were held behind closed doors because the centre had restricted visitations fearing the spread of the virus which has seen South Africa’s infection rate of cases skyrocketing staggeringly. This, however, did not deter the celebration with residents and staff at the centre going ahead and enjoying the day with lots of treats.

Debbie Christen, Rand Aid’s recreational programmes manager, said with the novel coronavirus posing a great risk to older people and those with underlying medical conditions, all but essential visits to the centre were restricted.

This meant that Betty’s son Robert Hood, who lives just around the corner, was unable to be with his mom in person on her big day. “However, he organised lovely eats for everyone on River Lodge 3. The care centre provided a cake and some beautiful flowers for Betty, and a special birthday tea was held to celebrate her momentous day,” said Christen.

The 95-year-old was born Betty Godwin, with her twin sister Peggy in Durban. Betty married Leslie Hood in August 1946. They were blessed with five children – Robert, Brian, Peter, Heather and Andrew – and have 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
