Community member’s tip-off leads to the arrest of a suspect in Joburg CBD

JOBURG CBD – The community is encouraged to continue feeding tip-offs to police in a bid to play a role in the fight against crime.

During routine crime prevention duties on 16 March, police received a tip-off from a community member about a suspicious man at the corner Kerk and Eloff streets in Joburg CBD.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, said the community member gave a description to the officers on duty. “He gave police description of the clothes [that the] suspect was wearing. [Police] recognised a male fitting the description given. They searched him, recovered an unlicensed firearm with no serial number and live rounds. [The man] failed to produce a licence to possess a firearm.”

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Mbele added the firearm was sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

Community members are encouraged to continue giving police information which will help in the fight against crime.
