Suspect arrested for possession of hijacked vehicle, three suspects on the run

JOBURG CENTRAL – The suspect will appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court as he has been charged for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A 32-year-old man was arrested when local police noticed a suspicious white Hyundai i20 with four occupants at the corner of Marshall and Commissioner streets in Joburg Central on the morning of 18 March.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said police tried to stop the vehicle but it sped off. “[A] chase ensued until they were cornered at corner Hebert and Marshall streets,” he said. “They jumped out of the vehicle and ran away in different directions. “Police apprehended one suspect and recovered an unlicensed firearm with no serial number and live ammunition.”

Police then found out that the vehicle was hijacked in Yeoville last year. An investigation was underway and the hunt for the three other suspects was underway.

The arrested suspect has been charged with possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 20 March.
