Councillor Huggett urges residents to be responsible during shutdown

HOUGHTON – 'We as South Africans literally hold our lives and the lives of others in our hands.'

Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett has encouraged residents to practice safety precautionary measures during the national shutdown saying these are the most pressing times in South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announced on 24 March that the country will be on a 21-day shutdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus from midnight on 26 March to midnight on 16 April.

Hugget’s message to residents is that we are entering a very different world in these very challenging times created by the coronavirus. “Please take every precaution to avoid contracting it and/or spreading it.”

“We, as South Africans, literally hold our lives and the lives of others in our hands. This is serious. I recently saw a request to change ‘social distancing’ to ‘physical distancing’. More than ever we are going to need each other. Keep up the social contacts but keep the physical distance. Keep safe and keep well.”

As the councillor for Ward 73, Huggett thanked local residents’ associations for their dedication to the community and to their support. “They have never failed to assist in every way and I commit to continue supporting them for as long as I am councillor.”

She also mentioned that the development of the recent formation of the community policing sectors and a community policing forum executive is extremely encouraging. “This has given the residents’ associations and the communities a voice with SAPS and a healthy and encouraging relationship is already developing.

“Colin Wasserfall is a deputy chairperson of the Lower Houghton Resident Association and the chair of the CPF executive and he and his team are already working with SAPS to assist and support them in every way with the crisis we are facing with the coronavirus.”

Huggett pleaded with the community to stay informed of regular updates about the situation from the media, especially during the shutdown. As she receives information, she will be sure to share it. She added that those who wish to receive her newsletter can send her their email addresses and also urged community members to feel free, as per usual, to contact her via WhatsApp on 071 785 8068 or email eleanorhuggett@gmail.

Residents can also download the telegram app and join the Ward 73 notifications group where Hugget posts regular updates and information.
