Security guard injured on duty after shooting in Joburg CBD

JOBURG CBD – The security guard was shot in the lower body in the early hours of 26 March.

A 39-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder at the corner of Jeppe and Von Weilligh streets in Joburg CBD in the early hours of 26 March.

It is alleged that a 38-year-old security guard who was on duty at about 2am was shot in the lower body outside his post by the suspect. The spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele said the suspect was with his friend who was on crutches and they asked for help. “While the colleague of the victim was giving them the telephone number of the ambulance, the suspect pulled [out] his licensed firearm and fired one shot. The victim was taken to the hospital. The motive for the shooting is not yet known.”

According to Mbele, the suspect fled back to his residence. The police were contacted and managed to arrest the suspect while he was sleeping in his room.

The firearm was confiscated, and police are still investigating.
