Councillor Fisher cancels public meeting due to coronavirus

ORANGE GROVE – The cancellation of the meeting comes after the President banned gatherings of 100 or more people to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

Heading the call by President Cyril Ramaphosa to ban all mass public gatherings due to the coronavirus crisis, Ward 74 councillor David Fisher has cancelled an upcoming public meeting.

With the escalating number of cases reported in the country of people infected with the virus, Ramaphosa has banned gatherings of 100 or more people to prevent further spread of the virus.

The cancelled meeting would have included a discussion on the infamous Orchards Clinic which has been under construction since 2016 and has experienced various challenges forcing contractors to halt work over the years. Although work resumed last year, it was reported that work stopped again after the contractor did not meet the deadline.

Fisher said the aim of the meeting was to give residents feedback and an update on the project. “But due to the spread and scare of the coronavirus, I have decided that the meeting cannot go ahead to prevent and to avoid more infection or spread of the virus. We just want to take preventative measures not to put our residents’ health at risk.”

The project will go ahead and information will be circulated through pamphlets and available social media platforms.

Fisher added that he does not believe it will be safe for people to gather in masses during this crisis.

Details: David Fisher 082 822 6070.
