Procedure should be followed when building a property

JOBURG – Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer said any new building and any alteration that adds on to or changes the structure of an existing building must go to the City's (Planning) Development Management Department for approval.

The Department of Development Planning deals with businesses operating illegally. Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer advised residents who suspect this to be happening to please report it to Joseph Geduld via email.

“Please give the address and as much detail as possible. Examples of illegal land use are communes, churches, and businesses operating from residential stands. You can check the zoning using a tool you can download on your mobile phone and just zoom in to the property in question; or use the City of Joburg Geographic Information System to check.”

The councillor said any new building and any alteration that adds on to or changes the structure of an existing building must go to the City’s (Planning) Development Management Department for approval.

Residents can check if plans have been submitted by using the City’s Building Plan Progress online portal or, alternatively, contact building inspector Faried Watson.
