One case of coronavirus in Illovo

ILLOVO – Gibs campus said they realised the importance of practising social distancing during the current outbreak of Covid-19.

The Gordon Institute of Business Science (Gibs) in Illovo was informed of one Covid-19 infection. The Institute on 20 March, was informed that one of its faculty members, (a female aged 37, who has not travelled recently) had tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to the statement issued by Gibs, “The faculty member who remains asymptomatic is currently in quarantine and has been so since 15 March, when she was informed that she had been in social contact with an individual who had subsequently tested positive for the virus.”

It further stated that the school is in the process of informing all individuals, including one cohort of Gibs students, who have been in contact with the faculty member.

All face-to-face classes on the Gibs campus were suspended earlier this week. Classes were moved online or rescheduled until after mid-April. The statement further said that prior to learning about this case, measures had already been taken to significantly curtail visitors to campus.

“In line with the measures agreed, the campus is now closed to all except those Gibs students who have a compelling reason for visiting campus. Earlier this week we implemented measures to confirm that those entering the campus had not travelled in the past 14 days, that they were not experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms and that they committed to social distancing and other healthy hygiene habits while on campus. These measures continue to be enforced,” read the statement.

Gibs said, “Despite the measures enforced by the campus, our first case brings to light the rigor and discipline required by all of us to practice social distancing.”

On 20 March, the Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize announced that there were 202 cases of Covid-19 in South Africa.

Sinenhlanhla Jimoh, the spokesperson for the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) said that she could not confirm cases of single patients due to their ethical guidelines, but can only confirm the number of latest cases in the Province, as issued by the Department of Health.

The public is advised to call the coronavirus hotline on 0800 029 999 with any suspected cases of coronavirus or to report or obtain information relevant to the pandemic.
