Johannesburg’s first Creative Industries Career Expo off to a good start

NEWTOWN – Participants were encouraged to think creatively when deciding on a career in the arts industry.


Newtown was abuzz from 11 to 13 March with learners of various schools attending the inaugural Creative Industries Career Expo at Museum Africa in Johannesburg.

The expo attracted a number of higher education institutions, and private and public art companies which exhibited their work.

It was hosted by Creative Knowledge, in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, Museum Africa, Creative Feel, the Samro Foundation and the Market Theatre Foundation.

According to the organisers, the expo was to inform learners, educators and parents of the career opportunities in the creative industries and to further expose and promote courses offered at relevant institutions.

Organiser, David April, said the expo showcased careers in various industries of arts, from visual arts, music, animation, craft, photography and fashion among others.

“This is the first of its kind and so far the turnout has been good and we’re happy with what we are seeing today on the first day,” said April.

“We have a wide variety of workshops which will enable participants to familiarise themselves with various industries in the art sector. The expo is meant to expose people, especially learners, to various industries that they can venture into and make a living from that particular field.”

Performing arts legend Concord Nkabinde held a workshop focusing on music, dance and theatre. He encouraged participants to think creatively when they chose careers in these industries.
