Operations meeting addresses Rosebank crime

ROSEBANK – Assault, scams and illegal parking seem to be the major offences in Rosebank and the police aim to deal with them.

The Rosebank Operations meeting on 11 March addressed crime in the precinct. Held at the Southern Sun Rosebank Hotel, the meeting was attended by various stakeholders including the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Rosebank Police Station representatives.

Excellerate Services manager Simon Molele said drug dealer issues were under the spotlight with dealers being scattered all over the precinct. He, however, said the problematic areas were being closely monitored. “Cell phone snatching has increased on Sturdee Avenue with suspects using vehicles similar to e-hailing cars. Bank card scamming has also increased at the Shell Garage ATM,” Molele reported.

He went on to say that there were lots of fights occurring among displaced people.

Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said assault and common robbery were a big challenge.

He also warned people about a scam whereby, ‘rapists will wait by the robots and ask seemingly lost employment seekers if they are on their way to an interview. If they say yes then the perpetrators will offer the victim a lift then take them to underground parking where they rape them’.

There was one such case last year and another one this year.

Mdletshe reported that there had been two cases of stolen Rolex watches in the month of March and warned people to be vigilant with their valuables and more so towards Easter holidays.

With regards to theft of motor vehicle, the sergeant suggested that management of various places become more pro-active and have special parking bays for targeted vehicles which include foreign-registered vehicles, Ford, Toyota Fortuner, bakkies and Volkswagen.

Metro police representative Superintendent Matsilele Maluleke said load-shedding was a challenge because they currently don’t have enough officers to serve Region B wards. He also said they had two tow trucks for the region and were waiting for qualified officers to operate them.

Addressing illegal parking Maluleke said, “If you park where you are not supposed to park, the private company or security have the right to clamp and fine. The fine doesn’t go to JMPD but the offended company. Let’s respect signage and not park where we’re not supposed to park.”
