Surrender illegal ammunition

PARKVIEW – Residents are reminded to hand in illegal/unwanted firearms and ammunition by 31 May.

The firearm amnesty period commenced on 1 December last year and ends on 31 May this year.

Parkview police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said, “The six-month firearm period will afford South Africans an opportunity to surrender illegal/unwanted firearms, ammunition and or firearm parts to help clear illegal guns from the streets. Surrendering of illegal/unwanted firearms, firearm parts and or ammunition, [can be done] without fear of being prosecuted for unlawful possession.”

Persons or institutions that meet the criteria below can apply for amnesty:

  • Persons in possession of a firearm without a legitimate licence, permit or authorisation
  • Persons in possession of a firearm part (slide, bolt or breech-block) without a licensed firearm capable of bearing that part
  • Persons in possession of ammunition without a licensed firearm capable of discharging the ammunition or without a collector’s permit
  • Persons in possession of illegally imported firearms
  • Persons who inherited firearms but failed to obtain a licence, permit or authorisation for such firearms
  • Persons who have been declared unfit to possess a firearm but failed to surrender their firearms and ammunition
  • Businesses (including private security businesses) with firearms and ammunition that ceased to carry on business and failed to dispose of the firearms and ammunition
  • Persons in possession of firearms of which the firearm licence, permit or authorisation has been terminated in terms of the Firearms Control Act
  • Institutions which wish to surrender obsolete/redundant/discarded firearms
  • Persons who wish to voluntary surrender their legally possessed firearms and or ammunition may do so at any time before, during and after the amnesty.

“Parkview SAPS is appealing to the community to surrender illegal/unwanted firearms, firearm parts and or ammunition, without fear of being prosecuted for unlawful possession, to help create a safer South Africa for all,” said Sibeko.
