Waverley Gardens Memorial Care host discussions on dementia

WAVERLEY – Dementia is progressive and it cannot be cured says Sylvia Birkhead, an independent occupational therapist.

It is believed that about 31 million people around the world live with dementia.

This according to Sylvia Birkhead, an occupational therapist who gave a talk on the condition at Waverley Gardens Memory Care centre on 1 March.

Birkhead said it was estimated that worldwide 50 million more people would be affected by dementia by 2050.

According to the specialist, there are more than 100 types of dementia with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common in our communities.

Defining the condition, Birkhead said this was a disease of the brain but it also affected other parts of the human body and could affect speech, movement and posture.

She said the condition was genetic and it could affect anyone including the younger generation, contrary to the historic belief that it affected only older people.

“Anybody can get dementia,” Birkhead emphasised.

“Even if you are diagnosed with this condition you can still manage to live a meaningful life with proper care. There is no drug to fix it but one needs to manage it well.”

Because this condition was hereditary, she said one should always try to do things that would stimulate one’s brains and be mindful of things.

“Because it [dementia] has different types, it means that there are different symptoms as well and if you suspect you might have it you should consult a doctor.

“The doctor will also administer medication based on the diagnosis on the type of dementia you might be living with.”

She said depending on the severity of the condition, some people could live with it for up to 20 years.
