Police warn women to refrain from entertaining unknown men on Facebook

ORANGE GROVE – The suspect did not use protection while allegedly raping his victim.

An Orange Grove man is in police custody after he allegedly raped a woman he met through a social media site on 7 February.

It is apparent that the suspect, who met his victim on Facebook, forced himself onto his victim without even using protection.

According to Norwood police spokesperson, Sergeant Eric Masotsha, the 28-year-old victim from Berea took a taxi to Orange Grove to meet with her ‘date’ after they had ‘agreed so’ on Facebook.

“The suspect picked her up with his car and took her to buy some food before requesting that they go to his house in Orange Grove where he [allegedly] forced himself onto her,” Masotsha said.

“The victim told the police that the first time when he [forced himself onto her] he used protection but the next time he did it without. The woman screamed and that is when the neighbours heard a noise around 4am and went to investigate.”

During that time, the suspect was chasing the woman away and refused to give her money for transport claiming his wife is on her way, added Masotsha.

The neighbours took the woman to the Norwood Police Station where a case of sexual assault was open.

“The police then went to the house where the suspect was found and arrested immediately,” Masotsha added.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon facing a charge of rape and Masotsha said the investigation continues.

Police have warned women to avoid entertaining unknown men on social media sites saying they are putting their lives in harm’s way.
