Liability directed at camp and school: Forensic report of Enock Mpianzi briefing

PARKTOWN – Lesufi addresses the media, the lawyer says 'the horse has already bolted'.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi released the forensic report looking into the death of Parktown Boys’ learner Enock Mpianzi on 4 March.

Enock died on his first day of Grade 8 at Parktown Boys’ High School on 15 January while on a Grade 8 Orientation Camp at the Nyati Bush and River Break in Brits.

However, there was a kickback from parents at the meeting to remove the media.

There are three points that Lesufi will go through.

Lesufi concurred that there is a view that the media is allowed to attend the meeting. He said that we are a public institution and we are democratic. He said that he needed to respect the side of the parents and that of the media too.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette’s journalist Sarah Koning reported live from the meeting.

At 8pm Lesufi addressed the media on 4 March after the delay.

The law firm appointed by the department is Harris Nupen Molebatsi Attorneys. According to Lesufi, the family was given a copy of the full report at 11am (4 March). The family said that they need time to study the report before expressing their view on it.

WATCH: At the beginning of the meeting, the media were asked to leave.

Lesufi said the SGB pleaded with the department to handle the matter with care because of the high number of teachers implicated.

Harris said the teachers were negligent and not present during the start of the activity and did not stop the activity when they saw an issue.
