Community thanked and encouraged to keep helping with erosion project

PARKVIEW – The Zoo Lake User Group is thankful for all the community's help with the erosion project and encourages them to keep assisting.

Volunteers recently went to Zoo Lake in Parkview to assist with the Zoo Lake Erosion Project.

According to project coordinator Jacky Cresteil, the volunteers worked especially hard in planting all the plants that were kindly donated by the residents in Parkview and Saxonwold. “We completed phase three and almost half into phase four – far surpassing our target for the day!” Cresteil said.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended and helped on the day and would like to encourage the community to continue to support us with their time and donations. The progress we have made since we started is phenomenal and we could not have done this without the communities support.”

Chairperson of the Zoo Lake User Group, Fran Haslam said their next challenge is the south end of the lake (phase five) that has been most severely damaged by water. “We are appealing to companies that manufacture steel gabions (cages with rocks inside) to assist us with this area. We would require a site inspection and cost estimate to accomplish our vision at a competitive price or discount,” she said.

Haslam added that, since they rely on the donations from the public, they are concerned about the cost of this phase that will need a large injection of money to complete. “We will have one more volunteer planting day on 4 April to finish off phase four before winter starts. Our volunteer planting days will continue in early August when the weather starts warming up again on the west side of the lake.”
