Parkview police pleased with convictions

PARKVIEW – Station commander Colonel Theledi Gopane acknowledged the partnership between police and security companies within the policing precinct.

The station commander for the Parkview Police Station, Colonel Theledi Gopane welcomed the convictions of a number of suspects who had been apprehended by the station’s officers.

The spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said a 31-year-old man was found guilty of housebreaking with the intent to steal on 6 February.

“This happened after a complainant heard a noise outside his home in Parktown on 12 January this year. When he checked outside, he saw a man running away and pressed a panic button and a security guard responded and the man was apprehended,” said Sibeko.

“Parkview police were called and after a thorough investigation it was identified that the garage door lock was damaged.”

Sibeko added that the suspect, Francois Raaths was arrested for housebreaking with the intent to steal. The Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court found Raaths guilty and he was sentenced to two years direct imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm and ammunition.

Sibeko said on the same day, Zafaniy Ncube (38) was also found guilty of trespassing and malicious damage to property, which was committed on 11 October last year in Parkhurst. The accused was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment suspended for three years.

In another case, 37-year-old Thamsanqa Mtombeni was found guilty of reckless and negligent driving in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on 10 February. He was sentenced to a R2 000 fine or six months’ imprisonment. The incident occurred on 12 July 2013 when two vehicles were involved in an accident along Jan Smuts Avenue at the corner of Westcliff Drive. The accused was taken for blood tests as he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The blood test results confirmed that he was over the legal alcohol limit.

On 19 February, Thapelo Moeketsi (37) was found guilty of theft and sentenced to 12 months direct imprisonment. The theft was committed on 18 December last year in Emmarentia.

Gopane welcomed the convictions and commended the members of the Parkview detective service for their hard work. He further acknowledged the partnership between the police and security companies within the policing precinct and encouraged community members to come forward with information to assist investigations.
