Man sentenced to nine years for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition

JOBURG CENTRAL – The male suspect was sentenced to seven years for unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of ammunition.

A 40-year-old male suspect, Bridan Uwagboe was sentenced to nine years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 13 February.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson Xoli Mbele said Uwagboe was sentenced to seven years for an unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of ammunition.

The suspect was arrested on 24 October last year when police were on duty at Wanderers Taxi rank on the corner of Noord and Wanderers streets.

“While walking in the taxi rank next to the taxis to Durban, they saw a suspicious male carrying a black bag. They searched his bag and recovered a firearm with six live rounds. The firearm has a serial number which shows that it was reported stolen in Tembisa during a house robbery in October 2010.”

Mbele commended the work of investigating officer Constable Makgoshwane Dolamo of Johannesburg Central Detectives, He added, “We hope this sentence will scare away would-be offenders from committing the same crime.”
