Taxi passenger arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearm

JOBURG CENTRAL – The Johannesburg Central Police will conduct ballistic testing to determine if the firearm has been commissioned of serious and violent crimes.


A 33-year-old male passenger in a taxi was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on the corner of Commissioner and Nugget streets on 23 February.

The Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson Xoli Mbele said officers were on a stop and search routine. “They stopped a white Quantum taxi full of passengers. They searched them and recovered a firearm and live ammunition from one of the passengers,” he added.

The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes. The suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and police are investigating.

Station Commander Brigadier Perumal commended members for removing an unlicensed firearm in the wrong hands.
