St David’s boys serenade girls at Kingsmead College on Valentine’s Day

ROSEBANK – Learners at Kingsmead College responded with great applause when the chamber choir of St David's Marist Inanda serenaded them on Valentine's Day.

The chamber choir of St David’s Marist Inanda spent their Valentine’s Day serenading girls at various schools as part of their tradition.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette visited Kingsmead College in Rosebank where learners enjoyed and applauded the performance by the boys’ school.

Director of cultural affairs and choir conductor at St David’s Marist Inanda, Jaco Ferreira said the serenade was a tradition at St David’s that was used to show appreciation for women in society as well as treat and entertain them.

“It’s a huge ego trip for the boys because the girls react well to their songs,” laughed Ferreira, adding that the yearly tradition also assisted to strengthen bonds with girls’ schools.

The boys sang four songs including If I Ever Saw Heaven by Roan Ash, I’m Yours by Jason Mraz, You Should Let Me Love You by Mario and an Elvis Presley medley.

The Glee Club at Kingsmead College responded by performing I’m Yours by Jason Mraz and a mashup of I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You and Superman.

Director of arts and music at Kingsmead, Elsabe Fourie said three years ago the girls decided to respond to the boys by returning the favour.

The Glee Club also handed the boys roses following their performance. Fourie added that the girls were modern women and in their ideal world they would instead visit the boys’ schools.

The St David’s boys also visited Roedean, St Teresa’s and St Mary’s during their Valentine’s Day tour.
