1st Rosebank Cubs create sustainable compost at The Wilds

HOUGHTON – The 1st Rosebank Cubs were hard at work creating a sustainable compost heap at The Wilds on 15 February.

The 1st Rosebank Cubs spent the afternoon of 15 February creating a sustainable compost heap at The Wilds in Houghton.

The group of children between the ages of seven and 11, who usually meet in Bolton Road, decided to give back to the beautiful green space.

Pack scouter Keith Webb said, “We hike here often and asked how we could help. The Cubs will learn about composting and planting and we will demarcate bays where compost can develop over the months. City Parks can then use this compost going forward.”

Cub Aiden Faherty (10) who attends Linksfield Primary School said that he looked forward to learning about compost and potting spekboom at The Wilds.

Project initiator of the clean-up of The Wilds James Delaney said that he was excited to have the 1st Rosebank Cubs on board.

“For ages, we have had this big, unused area. For the last decade, all green waste from The Wilds has been taken by a truck to a landfill site 20kms away. It makes no sense when we can be making compost here. We are pushing City Parks to help us. This is a great project that saves our landfills,” said Delaney.
