Capsicum Culinary Studio in need of Rockie chefs

ALEXANDRA – The course consists of three-hour hands-on weekly sessions conducted by the schools' chef lecturers.

Often relegated as a nonstarter, the kitchen is now a key professional setting for many youngsters influenced by television programmes like MasterChef Junior or Taste Bud Battle.

In a statement, the country’s leading culinary school Capsicum Culinary Studio said, “There is an explosion of youngsters taking to the kitchen and wanting to learn how to cook evidenced by televised completion shows.” As a result, the school has identified a gap in the market and launched a new three-month course, Rookie Chef 2020, aimed at teens aged from 13 to 18.

The school added, “Youngsters with a passion for food and cooking will, from the course, learn how to prepare delicious starters, mains and desserts and be taught knife skills and kitchen safety.”

The course consists of three-hour hands-on weekly sessions conducted by the schools’ chef lecturers. “It costs R8 500 per candidate to cover an apron, basic chef’s knife, a kitchen towel, course notes, recipes, chef demos, all ingredients and prizes. Graduates will be issued with a certificate of completion.”

According to the studio’s national academic manager, Candice Adams, “There are youngsters who already know they want to make food their profession once they have finished school and this will give them a real advantage. Those who just want to increase their skills set will also find the course invaluable.

“Ultimately, though, we believe that it is important to get all children into the kitchen as it provides them with so many essential skills and learning tools for later life.”

The courses start on 22 February at the studio’s six national campuses including in Gauteng at, 3 Keyes Avenue in Rosebank, Bartlett Lake Office Park on the corner of Leith and Trichards roads, Boksburg and Menlyn Square, 34 Aramist Avenue, Waterkloof Glen, Pretoria.
