It’s never too late to get that degree

JOBURG – An online strategist explains why a degree is 'the gamechanger every professional needs to open new doors in their career.

With schools and varsity in full swing, some might be wondering if they still have a chance to further their education and go after the career they really want. The thought of entering the student world can be daunting or intimidating for some as they might feel they are too old or busy to pursue a degree.

Online strategist at Vega School, Cynthia Olmesdahl said a degree is not just a status symbol, “It’s the gamechanger every professional needs to open new doors in their career, and an opportunity to open your mind to the world and people that exist outside of what you already know.”

Olmesdahl provided these four reasons why should try to obtain your degree despite the hurdles:

  1. Learning never ends: Education or learning is not reserved for children or young adults, your maturity and life experience means that you are likely to be in a better position to truly reap the benefits of higher education. A degree isn’t just about earning a qualification but it can give you greater understanding and insight of the world around you.

2. Online studies are the way to go: If you feel that you won’t have time to attend lectures because of your busy schedule, online studies give you the freedom and flexibility to learn at your pace. Finding a work and study balance is a must, there are many options for part-time studying which can be a struggle but the rewards will be worth it and relieve the stress of the cost of full-time studying.

3. It helps with your employability: If you have plans of moving up the corporate ladder or studying to get  an edge over other candidates, a degree can help you do that. You develop skills that will add value to the workplace or your team

4. Finding your purpose: Looking for a career that will be more fulfilling? Assess where you are, do you love what you do? What brings you joy? A degree can help find you some of those answers but, most importantly, learning never ends.
