Clean up Greenside and get to know your neighbours

GREENSIDE – The event, which is organised by the Greenside Residents' Association, takes place on 22 February.

Greenside residents who want to create a cleaner neighbourhood and get to know their neighbours are invited to the suburb’s first Green Day on 22 February.

Residents, local school learners and the local registered NPO Let’s Work will clean Sir Lionel Phillips Park above Pirates Club.

Greenside Residents’ Association chairperson Judith Ancer said, “We want to create a day that encourages Greenside residents and local businesses to get to know each other, build pride in our neighbourhood and create a sense of community. We are calling on community members to come and meet each other and enjoy the day while putting something back in our area.”

Volunteers will pick up litter, paint the park’s jungle gym and treat the wooden poles with creosote.

Ancer said that this is also an opportunity for local schoolchildren to earn community service hours.

Residents can take a break from the hard work to get a snack from food vendors. Children can work off their energy on jumping castles or learn how to use the gym equipment while adults and children can try out yoga, martial arts, core strengthening and self-defence training.

Representatives of the Johannesburg Urban Forest Alliance will be available to discuss the polyphagous shot-hole borer and take residents on a walk through the park to show them how to identify infected trees.

CAP security will also be on-site to discuss their work in the area.

Green Day is also an opportunity for residents to renew their membership and collect multi-event car passes.

Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer will also be available to answer questions.

Ancer said the association is putting a lot of effort into building community spirit and would like to raise awareness about the work they are doing on behalf of the local residents.

One such initiative, Let’s Work, offers homeless people paid work cleaning up streets and parks, collecting litter, clearing vegetation and cutting grass.

The event will begin at 10am and run until 1pm.
