Union of the Jewish Women donate stationary to local schools

HOUGHTON – One child from Bright Star Academy kissed his stationary pack, looked up and smiled to the sky.

Through the generosity of the community for Mitzvah Day 2019, the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) donated stationery to various local schools to empower them with necessary educational tools.

These packs were donated to learners at UJW Alexandra Aftercare and Feeding Scheme, Johannesburg Girls Preparatory School and King David Junior School Linksfield’s partner school, Bright Star Academy.

Cindy Kree, executive director at UJW in Johannesburg, said more than 400 stationery packs were collected and donated to underprivileged schools.

Kree added that they had partnered with Adam Braun, founder of Pencils of Promise. “Throughout the first term of 2020, UJW has been distributing the stationery packs to the different beneficiaries,” Kree said.

“All the children were able to choose what colour ruler they wanted. One child from Bright Star Academy kissed his stationery pack, looked up and smiled to the sky.”

A lesson learnt from this has been how choice is often something we take for granted, she said, adding that the gift of education was by far one of the most powerful gifts parents could give their children.

“However, education alone needs resources, and we were so honoured to be able to provide these children with the resources they need to use their imagination, write new stories, do sums and build a better and brighter future for South Africa.”

Kree thanked the donors who made this possible and furthermore wished the learners ‘good luck’ for 2020.
