Nashua Children Foundation feed 1000 children with fresh sandwiches

NORWOOD – The sandwiches were made by children from the mini council who are from various local schools.

About 1 000 children of Jackson’s Drift informal settlement were the beneficiaries of freshly prepared sandwiches on 2 February at a handover ceremony held at Norwood Mall.

The event was organised by Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation partnering with Pick n Pay and the sandwiches were prepared by the children of Johannesburg Mini Council.

According to Helen Fraser, an operations director at the foundation, this was the first of the many they intended to have in support of charity organisations in Gauteng.

Fraser said the first sandwiches giveaway event was held at Waterwax informal settlement in Protea Glen, Soweto in November last year. She added that their foundation-supported 73 children’s organisations in Gauteng and one in Limpopo.

“At the Norwood event, we prepared sandwiches with jam and peanut butter and they were handed to children who reside in Jackson’s Drift who attend Lerato Education Centre in Eikenhof in the South of Johannesburg,” Fraser said.

“The sandwiches were made by children from the mini council who are from various schools across the city. We partnered with Pick n Pay this time and they donated aprons, gloves and protective hairnets.”

Another event is expected soon at the same venue with a different charity organisation expected to benefit from this charity drive.

Fraser said the children didn’t necessarily have to come to the venue but a representative for them could come through and collect the sandwiches.

She said the mini council would set the date and identify the charity organisation for the next handover.
