Suspect arrested for dealing in Stilpane

NEWTOWN – One other suspect was arrested for defeating the ends of justice.

During a routine patrol by the Metro police IIOC reaction unit on Carr Street and Miriam Makeba Street in Newtown on 2 February, officers noticed a man selling Stilpane medication on the street.

A search by officers led to the recovery of 26 bottles of Stilpane in the suspect’s backpack and he was arrested. As the police were executing the arrest, the suspect’s friend started interfering and was given a verbal warning, Chief of the Metro police David Tembe said, “He then tried to free his friend. He was also arrested for defeating the ends of justice and resisting arrest.”

Stilpane contains codeine and can be used as a drink mix by mixing the syrup with a soft drink, the combination which is known as ‘lean’. It can cause sleepiness and give the user a high. Stilpane is not sold over the counter anymore and needs a prescription because of the use of it as a drug.

Both suspects were detained at Johannesburg Central Police Station.
