Six suspects arrested in a foiled robbery in Johannesburg CBD

JOHANNESBURG – The suspects were also arrested for alleged conspiracy to commit crime.

Six suspected robbers were arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad in possession of illegal firearms and suspected stolen cars on 23 January.

The suspects were apparently on their way to commit a crime and were arrested on the corner of Miriam Makeba and Carr streets in the Joburg CBD.

The unit’s spokesperson, senior personnel officer Raymond Sambo said Flying Squad members were on their way to a petrol filling station when they noticed six occupants of a white Hilux bakkie and requested backup.

“On arrival at the scene, the vehicle was searched and no firearms were found,” added Sambo.

“They [police] proceeded to view the CCTV footage at the garage and discovered that the suspects were using four vehicles which were parked in the vicinity.”

He said police searched the cars which included a Mercedes-Benz which had been reported stolen at Johannesburg Central Police Station. The other vehicles were a bronze Hilux, grey Golf 7 and a white Hilux.

A black bag containing two 9mm pistols (Girsan and Norinco) and a Dashprod rifle and ammunition were recovered inside one of the vehicles.

The suspects aged between 28 and 40 years old have since appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on charges which include alleged conspiracy to commit a crime.
