Houghton Nursery School children take pride in own surroundings

NORWOOD – The school decided to build two new dustbins after their previous bins were destroyed.

The staff and children of Houghton Nursery School in Norwood take pride in keeping both their school grounds and pavement clean.

This was made evident when they built two dustbins outside their facilities to encourage locals not to litter on the ground but rather use the bins to ensure the area remains clean and tidy. The school’s gardeners built the bins using bricks donated by parents and bricks and cement bought by the school.

Linda Lewis, the school’s secretary, said previously there were concrete bins outside the school but they had been destroyed. She added that they first made a request for a new bin from their local councillor but they were informed it was not available. “Our principal [Jenifer Soicher] made a request then to build the bins and I believe they had an understanding and the dustbins were then built,” Lewis said.

“The reason for this was that people used to dump all sorts of rubbish near our nursery school and we felt that this was not right. But we must make it clear to people that the dustbins cannot be used for gardening waste material or rubble but just little things like a can of cooldrink or just your [fast food] packs.”

The bins are well managed – the school puts plastic bags inside, take them out when they are full and put them out when the council waste removal trucks make their weekly pick-ups.

Lewis said, “They are here and all people need to do is to utilise them responsibly because it is the right thing to do.”
