Jeppe police pay courtesy visit to schools in own precinct

JEPPE – Another campaign will be launched soon to supplement the current school campaign.

In their quest to ensure safety during the opening of schools in the Johannesburg East region, Jeppe police embarked on their annual Back to School campaign on 15 January.

The police, including their senior managers, visited various schools in their precinct to, among other things, ensure the safety of children but also to warn them about the effects of crime.

In the recent past, Gauteng schools had been marred by incidents of violence where schoolchildren had been stabbed by fellow learners and the police said they wanted to curb such incidents in their area of service.

Through this campaign, the spokesperson for the Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi, said they wanted to ensure the smooth opening of schools.

He added that their station commander, Brigadier Wiseman Mthembu and his team, were out in full swing to ensure the campaign’s success.

“I can safely confirm that this was really successful and everything went very well and accordingly,” he said.

“During the campaign, we try to monitor the process and provide police visibility as part of our station’s crime prevention programme. We visit the schools and give talks to the learners about the effects of drugs, bullying as well the dangers of carrying dangerous weapons.”

This, however, did not only end with the Back to School campaign but it was an ongoing effort by the police to ensure a safe environment of learning and teaching in schools, added Munyayi.

The station will soon be launching another campaign which will target schools and was aimed at encouraging learners to take a stand against crime.

“We will be launching the #NotInMySchool campaign. The idea is to put banners with signatures of children declaring their unwavering support in the name of the fight against crime.”
