Three arrested for robbing victim at Marlboro cemetery

MARLBORO – Police got a tip-off from the community about the suspects' whereabouts.

Three suspects are expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing and injuring their victim at gunpoint on 5 January.

The suspects, aged between 28 and 37 years old, face a charge of armed robbery and attempted murder, said the spokesperson for Bramley Police Station, Captain Molefe Mogodi.

It is alleged that the victim was walking through the cemetery alone in Marlboro in the evening when three unknown men approached him, said Mogodi.

“This is the information that was provided to the police with the victim alleging that they [suspects] then demanded his belongings while threatening him with a firearm,” he said.

“It is alleged further that one of the suspects shot at the victim during the robbery, injuring him before they left. The victim was then taken to hospital and has since been discharged.”

Mogodi said on 12 January, the sector commander of Sector 2 said he was on duty in the early hours of the morning patrolling Marlboro and Setjwetla informal settlement.

He was in the company of community patrollers when some members of the community approached him and tipped him off about the suspects’ whereabouts.

“They informed him about the suspects allegedly involved in the robbery which occurred in the cemetery.”

Using the information, the member and his team found the three men and arrested them, added Mogodi.

He said a charge of attempted murder has been added to the charge of armed robbery.

He, however, said a firearm used in the commission of the crime had not been found but added that the police were investigating.
