Parkhurst transformer substation hit by vandalism causing power outage

PARKHURST– The outage has affected several areas in Parkhurst, Craighall Park and Blairgowrie.


City Power Joburg said a fire occurred at a transformer substation on the corner of 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue in Parkhurst at 9pm on 14 January. 

On their Twitter account, it said it believes there was vandalism and attempted theft, the fire-damaged the cables and some infrastructure inside the transformer chamber. The fire was put out and repairs started in the evening.

Several parts in Parkhurst’s electricity supply were affected including Craighall Park and Blairgowrie.  Repairs were set to be completed early this morning (15 January). City Power gave an update which read, “Our technicians have identified the fault and we are working on isolating it so that we can restore power to the residents. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

Power has been partially restored to some customers.
