Jaeger and Kate shine at St Mary’s School’s 2019 matric results

WAVERLY – The school had a 100 per cent pass rate for 2019 and achieved a 98 per cent bachelor degree pass.

St Mary’s School Waverly has praised Jaeger Breen and Kate Jones for their outstanding performance in the 2019 Independent Examination Board (IEB) matric results released on 7 January.

Penny Mullan, deputy headmaster at the school, said the two achieved in the top one per cent in all eight of their chosen subjects.

Results:

Mullan said the school had a 100 per cent pass rate for 2019 and achieved a 98 per cent bachelor degree pass with 101 learners in total.

“This achievement is wonderful. However, in the long term it is most important that the results create opportunities for our pupils that allow them to lead significant lives and be valuable citizens of South Africa and the world,” said Mullan.

“It is hard to compare results from the previous year with the current ones because some statistics are better this year but some were better in 2018.”

Mullen added that the excellent results are due to multiple factors that allow their learners to achieve to this level. She mentioned that the support of parents and extended family is essential in instilling a good work ethic and a love of learning from a very young age.

She also said that a strong relationship exists between parents, girls and the school. “We have a learning community that values the work done within the school.”

According to Mullan, their learners love their school, embrace all opportunities it offers and actively engage in the learning process.

Speaking to Kate and Jaeger about the advice they would give to girls entering senior school, Jaeger said she feels building a good work ethic from the beginning is important. Kate added that girls should not worry if they do not make friends immediately as she made some of her closest friends in her matric year.

The girls agreed that to be an outstanding achiever takes hard work, consistency and setting goals.

Both girls are going to the University of Cape Town this year where Kate will be studying actuarial science and Jaeger will be studying medicine.
